[Part Finder Guide 03] VIN Decoder Guide: Use Your 17-Digit VIN for 100% Fitment Guarantee
Estimated reading time: 5 minutes
By now you’ve learned how to search by keywords and use our vehicle filter. But what if you want absolute certainty? What if you’re buying a critical part like an engine component, or you’re simply not 100% sure about your car’s exact specifications?
The answer: Your VIN.
This guide will show you how to find your VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) and how to let us do the heavy lifting. We’ll decode your VIN and tell you exactly which parts fit your car.
What is a VIN?
A VIN is your car’s unique fingerprint. It’s a 17-character code (letters and numbers) that contains detailed information about your vehicle:
- Country of manufacture
- Make and model
- Model year
- Engine type
- Transmission
- Factory options
- …and much more!
No two cars have the same VIN. That’s why it’s the most accurate way to find compatible parts.
Why Use Your VIN?
- ✅ 100% accuracy – eliminates guesswork
- ✅ Covers special editions – works even if your car has rare options
- ✅ Perfect for engine/electrical parts – where exact matching is critical
- ✅ Ideal for first-time buyers – if you’re unsure about your car’s specs
Step 1: Find Your VIN
Your VIN is located in several places on your vehicle. Here are the most common spots:
Location 1: Dashboard (Driver’s Side)
Stand outside your car and look at the lower corner of the windshield on the driver’s side. You’ll see a small plate or window cutout with a 17-character code.
Location 2: Driver’s Side Door Jamb
Open the driver’s door and look at the door pillar (where the door latches). There’s usually a sticker or metal plate with the VIN and other information like tire pressure and manufacturing date.
Location 3: Vehicle Registration / Insurance Documents
Your VIN is printed on your:
- Vehicle registration certificate (V5C / log book / title)
- Insurance policy documents
- Service records
Location 4: Under the Hood (Less Common)
Some vehicles have the VIN stamped on the front of the engine block or on the firewall.

Step 2: Write Down Your VIN Carefully
VINs use both numbers and letters. Watch out for common look-alikes:
| Character | Watch out for… |
|---|---|
| 0 (zero) | Don’t confuse with O (letter O) |
| 1 (one) | Don’t confuse with I (letter i) |
| 5 (five) | Can look like S |
| 8 (eight) | Can look like B |
Pro tip: Take a clear photo of your VIN with your phone. That way you can refer to it without making a typo.

When Should You Use the VIN Method?
| Scenario | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| You’re buying engine internals (pistons, gaskets, sensors) | ✅ Must use VIN |
| You have a European/import vehicle with complex specs | ✅ Highly recommended |
| You’re unsure about your car’s exact model/year | ✅ VIN is perfect |
| You’ve tried searching but keep finding “maybe fits” parts | ✅ Let us check with VIN |
| You’re buying simple wear items (wipers, bulbs, floor mats) | Vehicle filter is usually enough |
FAQ: VIN Questions Answered
Q: Is the VIN the same as the engine number?
A: No. The VIN identifies the whole vehicle; the engine number is specific to the engine block. We need the VIN, not the engine number.
Q: My VIN is only 11 digits – is that correct?
A: Modern vehicles (after 1981) use 17-digit VINs. If yours is shorter, it might be an older classic car, or you might be looking at a different number. Double-check the location.
Q: What if my car was modified or has a swapped engine?
A: Great question! Tell us about any modifications when you submit your VIN, and we’ll take that into account.
Q: How long does VIN verification take?
A: Most requests are answered within [X hours] during business days.
