Code Definition

The check engine light on our car came on, and my wife took it to the dealer for repair. (Her car, her choices)After a $190 “diagnostic fee,” they determined it needed a new gas cap and replaced it for her. A few hours later, the light came on again.I bought this scanner and downloaded the free Car Scanner ELM OBD2 app for my iPhone. Pairing was quick and easy, following the instructions and pairing through the app instead of through iOS settings. The app, and probably several of the others available, provide an intuitive and easy-to-use interface.It took a few minutes to scan all 150 sensors. The report said the check engine light was due to a “slight vapor leak,” and a Google of the accompanying numeric code listed several possible causes, including the gas cap. I cleared the code, and the check engine light went out. The light returned a while later, and another scan reported the same error. This information allowed my wife to return to the dealer and have them fix the real problem without additional diagnostic charges and credit for the cost of the unneeded gas cap.
